So you’ve landed in Miami, and the cold front is keeping you from the beach. Now you’re wondering what else there is to do besides sip Cuban coffee on Ocean drive. Perhaps you knew it was Art Week when you booked your flight or perhaps you’ve stumbled into all the crowds, traffic and mayhem. It’s possible that in your search for artsy, affordable things to do you’ve been discouraged by outrageous price points and invite-only parties.
Even if you have found some interesting looking events, you’re probably asking yourself: which of the endless options is best? Fear not, I’m here for you. I’ve spent hours trudging through event pages to bring you beta on the most interesting, affordable options within a few miles of South Beach.
First mention is Vidium’s 8th annual Art Basel Distraction Party. Heald December 8th at the 777 International Mall in downtown Miami (145 East Flagler St.) Having started in a warehouse in the outskirts of the Wynwood Art District as a means of resistance to the too-cool-to-be-accessed Art Basel scene the event has a rebellious, anti-art vibe.
The event organized by the Jellyfish brothers, Eddy and Greg, will feature experimental musical performances as well as videos produced by the duo. Upstairs, the mall-turned-artist-space has a number of studios to satiate your art cravings. In the basement, a dance floor and drinks served up by Gramps, a Wynwood bar popular with locals.
At the event, Eddy himself performs as Male Model, a dissonant, noisy affair. Other acts include the lovely-but-haunting Laboratory, solo noise musician Human Fluid Rot and the hard-hitting, often danceable Las Nubes (formerly Smvt). Entry for the event is FREE. Enough said.
The following night, Sunday, December 9th, Churchill's Pub in Little Haiti is hosting a Drag Battle Royale as hosted by the stunning Opulence Queen with prizes of up to $500 for the winning performer. Churchill’s, a not-for-the-faint-of-heart dive bar is located at 5501 NE 2nd Ave.
Entry for this all ages event is only $5 and gets you access to not only the drag show (bring some singles for tips!) but a number of musical performances including the garage-rock-esque Sewerside Bombers and a solo performance by Churchill's staple Lone Wolf.
Both of these locations can be reached from South Beach by bus, Lyft, bike, or magic carpet.
